Expressing Fractions as Decimals

Definition

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written as a numerator (top number) over a denominator (bottom number).

A decimal is another way to represent a fraction where the denominator is a power of 10 (like 10, 100, 1000, etc.). It uses a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part.

Expressing a fraction as a decimal means finding the equivalent decimal number that represents the same value.

Example 1: Convert 3/10 to a decimal.

    • Answer: 0.3 (three-tenths)
  • Example 2: Convert 75/100 to a decimal.
    • Answer: 0.75 (seventy-five hundredths)
  • Example 3: Convert 5/10 to a decimal.
    • Answer: 0.5 (five-tenths)
