 Welcome 👦👧boys and girls to Mathematics class. Today we will be going on an adventure where we will be exploring The Factors and Common Factors of a Number.

What are factors?

Factors

Definition (Simple):
A factor is a whole number that divides another number exactly, with no remainder.
(Think of factors as the "building blocks" of a number.)

Example:
Let's find the factors of 12.
The numbers that divide 12 exactly are:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
(Because 1×12=12, 2×6=12, 3×4=12).


How to find the factors of a number?











We can use the factor tree to find the factors of a number.


Common Factors

Definition (Simple):
A common factor is a number that is a factor of two or more different numbers. It is a "shared" building block.

Example:
Let's find the common factors of 12 and 18.

  • Factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

  • Factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18

  • The numbers that appear in both lists are: 1, 2, 3, and 6.
    (These are the Common Factors. The biggest one is 6, which we call the Greatest Common Factor or GCF).

  • What are common Factors?

  • The common factors of numbers are the factors that are common to both given numbers. Example:

  • 1. What are the common factors of 6 and 8?

  • 6= 1 2 3 6

  • 8= 1 2 4 8 

  • Ans= 1 and 2
