Welcome ๐ฆ๐งboys and girls to Mathematics class. Today we will be going on an adventure where we will be exploring The Factors and Common Factors of a Number.
What are factors?
Factors
Definition (Simple):
A factor is a whole number that divides another number exactly, with no remainder.
(Think of factors as the "building blocks" of a number.)
Example:
Let's find the factors of 12.
The numbers that divide 12 exactly are:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
(Because 1×12=12, 2×6=12, 3×4=12).
How to find the factors of a number?
We can use the factor tree to find the factors of a number.
Common Factors
Definition (Simple):
A common factor is a number that is a factor of two or more different numbers. It is a "shared" building block.
Example:
Let's find the common factors of 12 and 18.
Factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
The numbers that appear in both lists are: 1, 2, 3, and 6.
(These are the Common Factors. The biggest one is 6, which we call the Greatest Common Factor or GCF).
What are common Factors?
The common factors of numbers are the factors that are common to both given numbers. Example:
1. What are the common factors of 6 and 8?
6= 1 2 3 6
8= 1 2 4 8
Ans= 1 and 2
