The figure of Speech: Hyperbole

A hyperbole (say: hy-PER-boh-lee) is a figure of speech that uses extreme exaggeration to make a point or show strong feeling. It is not meant to be taken literally (word-for-word). It’s used to make things sound much bigger, better, or more dramatic than they really are.

Why do we use it?
To be funny, to be exciting, or to emphasize how we feel.

Simple Examples:

1.     "I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!"

o    Meaning: You are very hungry, not that you will actually eat a whole horse.

2.     "My backpack weighs a ton."

o    Meaning: Your backpack is very heavy, not that it actually weighs 2,000 pounds.

3.     "I’ve told you a million times to clean your room."

o    Meaning: You have told them many times, not exactly one million.

4.     "He was so tall, his head touched the clouds."

o    Meaning: He was extremely tall, not that he was actually touching clouds.

5.     "I’m so tired I could sleep for a year."

o    Meaning: You are very tired, not that you will actually sleep for 365 days.

The Big Game

Our best player, Mark, was having a tough night. The other team’s defense was like a brick wall. At halftime, the coach said, "We need to play with a fire in our bellies!" In the last minute, Mark finally got the ball. He shot it, and the ball soared through the air. The crowd held its breath. When the ball swooshed through the net for the winning point, the cheer from the fans was so powerful it could have knocked down a building. Mark's teammates were so happy they were floating on cloud nine. It was the most exciting game in the history of the world!
