What are Figures of Speech?

A figure of speech is a word or phrase that means something more than just its literal, or dictionary, definition. It's a way of saying something in a creative, imaginative, or funny way to make your writing more interesting and help the reader picture things better.

Think of it like this: if you say, "I'm hungry," that's literal. But if you say, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!" that's a figure of speech. You're not really going to eat a horse; you're just using a fun expression to show you are VERY hungry!

1. Simile

• Definition: A simile compares two different things using the words "like" or "as" .

• Purpose: To make a description more vivid and relatable.

• Simple Example: The baby's skin is as soft as silk.

• Poem Example: "My dog is like a rocket when he runs to get his ball."

• Explanation: We aren't saying the dog is a rocket. We're saying he runs as fast as one.

2. Metaphor

• Definition: A metaphor also compares two different things, but it does NOT use "like" or "as." It says that one thing is the other thing.

• Purpose: To make a very strong comparison by saying one thing is the other.

• Simple Example: Her voice is music to my ears.

• Poem Example: "The classroom was a zoo after the fire drill."

• Explanation: The classroom wasn't a real zoo. The speaker is saying it was very noisy and chaotic, like a zoo.

3. Personification

• Definition: Personification gives human qualities, feelings, or actions to non-human things like animals, objects, or ideas.

• Purpose: To make objects or concepts feel more alive and relatable.

• Simple Example: The wind whispered through the trees.

• Poem Example: "The angry sun glared down at the hikers."

• Explanation: The sun isn't truly "angry," and it can't "glare" like a person. We are giving it human characteristics to make the description more powerful.

4. Hyperbole

• Definition: Hyperbole is a huge exaggeration. It's overstating something for dramatic or funny effect.

• Purpose: To make a strong point or create a humorous image.

• Simple Example: I have a million things to do today!

• Poem Example: "I have told you a billion times to clean your room!"

• Explanation: You haven't told them a billion times, and you don't have a million things to do. You are just exaggerating to show how you feel.
