Finally, every food chain ends with decomposers.
Decomposers, like fungi, bacteria, and earthworms, are the recyclers of the
natural world. They break down dead plants and animals, returning vital
nutrients to the soil. These nutrients are then used by producers to grow, and
the cycle begins again.
While a food chain shows a single, straight path of
energy—from grass to grasshopper to mouse to snake to hawk—nature is much more
complex. Most organisms eat more than one type of food, and they are eaten by
multiple predators. This creates a more accurate and interconnected model
called a food web. A food web is a system of overlapping and
interconnecting food chains, demonstrating that energy doesn't follow just one
simple line but flows through a complex network of life.
