🤸🤸Reading Comprehension - Luminous and Non-luminous Objects🤸🤸
Welcome 👦👧boys and girls. Today, we'll be exploring a reading comprehension passage entitled. "Luminous and Non-luminous Objects". Read all given information carefully. Complete the tasks below.
Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects
What is Light?
Light is a form of energy that allows us to see the
world around us. Without it, everything would be dark. But did you know that
not all light is the same? Scientists divide light into two main types based on
where it comes from: luminous and non-luminous.
Luminous Objects
Objects that produce their own light are called luminous objects.
They are like little light-makers! The sun is the most important luminous
object for us on Earth. It gives us light, warmth, and energy. Other examples
of luminous objects are stars, light bulbs, candles, and fireflies. The light
from these objects comes from energy being changed into light energy. For
example, a light bulb changes electrical energy into light energy. We can see
luminous objects directly because the light they make travels from the object
straight to our eyes.
Non-Luminous Objects
Objects that do not make their own light are
called non-luminous objects. You cannot see them in a
completely dark room because they do not produce light. Instead, we see them
because they reflect light. Reflection happens when light
bounces off an object and travels to our eyes. Think about a book, a tree, the
moon, or even your pet. These are all non-luminous objects. They don't produce
light, but they reflect light from a luminous source. For example, the moon
doesn't produce its own light; it reflects light from the sun. When you look at
a book, you see it because light from a lamp or the sun bounces off the page
and into your eyes. Without a luminous source, non-luminous objects are
invisible.
Understanding How We See
The simple process of how we see anything involves two
main steps:
1.
A luminous object produces light.
2.
That light travels and hits a non-luminous
object, bouncing (reflecting) off it and into our eyes.
This is why we can see our friends, our food, and our homes during the day (thanks to the sun) and at night (thanks to electric lights). The better an object is at reflecting light, the brighter it appears. A mirror is a great reflector, while a dark piece of fabric absorbs more light and reflects less, making it look darker.

5.
Why can you see a book in a well-lit room?
a) Because the book produces its own light.
b) Because light reflects off the book and into your eyes.

electrical energy into light energy?
a) The Sun

8.
A dark-colored object appears darker than
a white object because it...
a) Reflects more light.
b) Produces its own light.
c) Reflects less light.
d) Is non-luminous.
9.
Which statement correctly describes the
process of how we see a cat sitting on a sunny windowsill?
a) The cat produces light, which travels to the window and then to our eyes.
b) The sun's light reflects off the cat and into our eyes.
c) The window produces light, which shines on the cat so we can see it.
d) The cat absorbs the sun's light and then re-emits it to our eyes.
10.
A student places a mirror and a piece of
black cloth on a table in a dark room and shines a flashlight on them. Which
statement is most accurate?
a) Both the mirror and the cloth will appear equally bright.
b) The mirror will appear brighter because it reflects more light.
c) The cloth will appear brighter because it absorbs the light.
d) Neither object will be visible because they are non-luminous.
11.
During a power outage at night, you light
a candle. You can now see your friend’s face. What is the role of the candle in
this scenario?
a) The candle is a non-luminous object reflecting light from your friend's
face.
b) The candle is a luminous object providing the light that reflects off your
friend's face.
c) The candle is absorbing light from the room to help you see.
d) The candle makes your friend's face luminous.
12.
Imagine you have a glowing toy (luminous)
and a toy car (non-luminous) in a box with a small hole. A tiny bit of light
enters the hole. Which statement is true?
a) You will only see the glowing toy because it makes its own light.
b) You will only see the car because it reflects all the light.
c) You will not be able to see either toy because there is no light.
d) You will see both toys clearly because they are both in the box.
Task 2: Write
"True" or "False" for each statement.
