The Properties of Light

Light is a form of energy that allows us to see the world around us. It travels in straight lines called rays, and it can interact with different materials in fascinating ways. How light behaves depends on the type of matter it hits.

When light strikes an object, one of three main things can happen: it can be transmitted (passed through), absorbed (taken in), or reflected (bounced off).

Transparent Materials
Think of a clean window. You can see clearly through it because it is transparent. Transparent materials allow almost all light to pass straight through them. The light is transmitted, so objects on the other side look crisp and clear. Other examples include clear glass, pure water, and clear plastic.

Translucent Materials
Now, think of a frosted glass window or a wax paper. These are translucent materials. They allow some light to pass through, but they also scatter it in many different directions. Because the light is scattered, you cannot see clearly through them; images appear blurry or foggy. It's like looking through a thin curtain.

Opaque Materials
Most objects are opaque. A wooden door, a brick wall, or a metal spoon are all opaque. Opaque materials do not allow any light to pass through them. They block the light completely, creating a shadow on the opposite side.

When light hits an opaque object, it is either absorbed or reflected.

Reflection
When light bounces off a surface, we call this reflection. You see yourself in a mirror because the light from your face hits the mirror and is reflected back into your eyes. A smooth, shiny surface, like a mirror or still water, reflects light very well, creating a clear image. A rough surface, like a piece of paper, also reflects light but scatters it, so you don't see a clear reflection.

Absorption
When light hits an object and is taken in, we call it absorption. When an object absorbs light, the light's energy is often turned into heat. This is why a black car feels hotter on a sunny day than a white car. The color black absorbs almost all light colors, while white reflects most light colors. Other colors absorb some colors of light and reflect others; this reflected light is the color we see. For example, a red apple absorbs all colors of light except red, which it reflects back to our eyes.

All these properties—transparent, translucent, opaque, reflection, and absorption—work together to create the world we see.
