    Every living thing on Earth needs energy to survive. This energy starts with the sun. Plants are the only living things that can capture the sun's energy. They use this energy, along with water and air, to make their own food in a process called photosynthesis. Because they make their own food, plants are called producers. They are the first and most important players in any food chain.

    Animals cannot make their own food. They must get their energy by eating other living things. These animals are called consumers. There are different types of consumers with different jobs.

    The first type is the primary consumer. These animals are also called herbivores. Herbivores only eat plants. For example, a rabbit that eats grass, or a caterpillar that eats leaves, are both primary consumers.

    The next type is the secondary consumer. These animals are also called carnivores, or omnivores. Carnivores are animals that eat other animals, and omnivores eat both plants and animals. A secondary consumer gets its energy by eating a primary consumer. For example, a snake that eats a mouse, or a fox that eats a rabbit, are secondary consumers.

    The chain can continue with tertiary consumers. These are often large carnivores or top predators. A hawk that eats a snake, or an orca that eats a seal, would be a tertiary consumer. These animals are at the top of the food chain.

    The final type of consumer is the decomposer. These are nature's recyclers! Decomposers, like worms, fungi, and bacteria, break down dead plants and animals. When they break down this dead matter, they return important nutrients to the soil. These nutrients help new plants grow, starting the cycle all over again. Without decomposers, our world would be covered in dead plants and animals.
