Conduction is

faster-moving particles in the hot object bump into the slower-moving particles
in the cooler object, passing on their energy. This is why a metal spoon heats
up when you leave it in hot soup. Metals are excellent conductors of heat.
Other materials, like wood or plastic, are poor conductors and are called
insulators. They slow down the transfer of heat.
Convection is
the transfer of heat through fluids, which are liquids and gases. When a fluid
is heated, it becomes less dense and rises. The cooler, denser fluid sinks to
take its place. This creates a circular motion called a convection current.
This is how a pot of water boils. The water at the bottom gets hot, rises, and
cooler water moves down to be heated. Convection is also how warm air rises
from a heater and circulates around a room.
Radiation is
the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and
convection, radiation does not need any matter to travel through. It can even
travel through the vacuum of space! The most common example is the heat we feel
from the sun. Another example is the warmth you feel when standing near a
fireplace, even if you aren't touching it or feeling the hot air from it.
Radiation transfers heat in straight lines.
We use our understanding of these three types of heat
transfer in our daily lives. We use an oven mitt (an insulator) to stop
conduction. We place a heater on the floor to use convection to warm a room. We
