  Welcome 👦👧boys and girls to another Mathematics class. Today we will be going on an adventure where we will be exploring the topic: What are Repeating and Growing Patterns?

What is a Pattern?

A pattern is a sequence that follows a rule. It's something that repeats or changes in a predictable way. We see patterns in numbers, shapes, colors, and even in nature!

Repeating Patterns

Definition:
A repeating pattern has a core that is repeated over and over again. The core is the smallest part that keeps repeating. The size and shape of the pattern stay the same.

  • Key idea: It’s like a loop. The same thing happens again and again.

  • Rule: The rule is the "core" that repeats.

Examples of Repeating Patterns:

  1. Shapes: 🔺⬜🔺⬜🔺⬜...

    • Rule: The core is 🔺⬜. It just keeps repeating.

  2. Colors: Red, Blue, Green, Red, Blue, Green, Red, Blue, Green...

    • Rule: The core is Red, Blue, Green. It repeats.

Growing Patterns

Definition:
A growing pattern is a sequence where something increases or decreases by a specific rule. The pattern changes and gets bigger (or smaller). It doesn't repeat the same core; it adds to it.

  • Key idea: It’s like climbing stairs. Each step is a little bigger.

  • Rule: The rule tells you how much to add (or multiply by) to get to the next term.

Examples of Growing Patterns:

  1. Shapes:

    • Row 1: 🔺

    • Row 2: 🔺🔺

    • Row 3: 🔺🔺🔺

    • Rule: Add one more triangle to each new row.

  2. Numbers (Addition): 3, 6, 9, 12, 15...

    • Rule: Add +3 each time.

  3. Numbers (Multiplication): 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...

    • Rule: Multiply by ×2 each time. (This is a fast-growing pattern!)

  4. Numbers (Decreasing): 100, 90, 80, 70...

    • Rule: Subtract -10 each time. (This is a "shrinking" pattern, but we still call it growing in math class).
